L'Etoile

Chris Addison stars in Chabrier's frothy comic opera.

Royal Opera House, Bow Street, London, WC2E 9DD

Tube: Covent Garden Station , Leicester Square Station

Dates: 01st - 24th February 2016

French director Mariame Clement gets her Royal Opera House debut with L'Etoile this February. The venue's first production of Emmanuel Chabrier's frothy comic opera stars comedian Chris Addison, known for The Thick of It, Doctor Who and Skins, as Smith. He will be joined on stage by French actor Jean-Luc Vincent. The opera tells the story of King Ouf I, who always celebrates his birthday with a public impalement. Ready for this years, he's gone in disguise among his people to find a suitable victim. Things descend into a chaotic farce from that point, with most of the characters also in disguise. As Clement stated: "L'Etoile is not really about the plot but about the silliness of it all".

Magical Lantern Festival

Over 50 giant lanterns and a 66-metre-long dragon light up the gardens.

Chiswick House and Gardens, Burlington Lane, London, W4 2RP

Tube: Turnham Green Station

Dates: 03rd February - 06th March 2016

Light-filled festivals are shining a light on picturesque parts of London this winter. First we had the illuminated walk at Kew, next came the hugely popular (free) Lumiere London and in February Chiswick House hosts the UK's largest ever Lantern Festival. With more than 50 giant lanterns spread across the gardens, visitors can see a whole host of animals and characters including a larger than life Terracotta Army. A 10-metre tall lantern recreates Beijing's Temple of Heaven, there's an 8-metre high lantern version of the porcelain Imperial Palace, an ethereal Tree of Life lantern, illuminating the oversized mushrooms, plants and flowers and a Mount Huaguo lantern to mark Chinese New Year and the Year of the Monkey. But the main centrepiece is a 66-metre-long dragon - that's the equivalent to five and a half London buses - stretching out across the lake. In amongst the lanterns are markets selling food, drinks and gifts.

Sergej Jensen

Textile works by the minimalist artist.

White Cube Bermondsey, 144-152 Bermondsey Street, London, SE1 3TQ

Tube: London Bridge Station

Dates: 03rd February - 17th April 2016

Primarily known for his textile works, Sergej Jensen's "physically scant paintings" (New York Times), "are tightrope walkers that travel light". Many of his minimalist works are made by sewing, bleaching or staining cloth. The imagery can be so abstract that it's hard to read but the titles often give an insight into their meaning. Patch-worked money bags used as a ground for 'Money Bags', for example, are suggestive of a symbiotic relationship between art and money. And in 'Brown Diamond' a series of black monochrome works are made by charring the outline of an abstract shape onto the canvas. This idea of 'painting without paint' is a recurring one for the Danish artist.

Nell Gwynn

Gemma Arterton stars in the West End transfer of Jessica Swale's historical play.

Apollo Theatre, 29 Shaftesbury Avenue, London, W1D 7EZ

Tube: Piccadilly Circus Station , Leicester Square Station

Jessica Swale's historical play Nell Gwynn transfers from Shakespeare's Globe to the West End in 2016, with Gemma Arterton in the title role. Directed by Christopher Luscombe, the play enjoyed a sell-out, critically acclaimed run at the Globe in 2015 and now this limited season at the Apollo Theatre will provide the chance to enjoy the show once more. Swale's work charts the rise of an unlikely heroine, from her lowly roots as a satsuma-seller in Coal Yard Alley. Gwynn then went on to become Britain's most celebrated actress in the 17th century, as well as the mistress of King Charles II. But, at a time when women are considered second-class citizens, can her charm and spirit protect her from the dangers of the court?

Hand to God

This provocative puppet comedy transfers direct from Broadway.

Vaudeville Theatre, 404 Strand, London, WC2R 0NH

Tube: Covent Garden Station , Charing Cross Station, Embankment Underground Station, Leicester Square Station

Dates: 05th February - 11th June 2016

Taking into account its favour with the critics and several Tony nominations, irreverent puppet comedy Hand to God shut surprisingly early in Broadway. But, now it's set for the West End and, alongside Avenue Q and The Book of Mormon , it's sure to fit right in. Being staged at the Vaudeville Theatre , the provocative comedy is about a devilish puppet who's let loose on a Christian theatre group. Foul-mouthed and increasingly vicious, it won't be long until things get completely out of control. The New Yorker described it as "Sesame Street meets The Exorcist" while The New York Times hailed it as "wickedly funny".

Jean Genet's tense 1947 drama The Maids is given a starry revival in 2016, with Orange is the New Black star Uzo Aduba, Fresh Meat's Zawe Ashton and Downton Abbey's Laura Carmichael tackling the powerful roles. The Jamie Lloyd Company production of Genet's psychological drama will be staged at the Trafalgar Studios - the first time the piece has been staged in the West End for twenty years - and will once again present a vicious analysis of the class system and a provocative exploration of sexuality. Set in a luxurious bedroom, the play is loosely based on real life sisters Lea and Christine Papin, who killed their employer in 1933, and sees two maids fantasise about killing the lady of the house in dangerous and sadistic scenarios.
