The Old Vic is staging an Arthur Miller double bill in 2019 with The American Clock and All My Sons, but it's the Young Vic that's taking on the writer's most famous play. In a bold new adaptation, Death of a Salesman will be given new meaning with the story told through the eyes of an African American family. Revered director Marianne Elliott - renowned for putting contemporary twists on classics - is behind the production while Wendell Pierce of The Wire, Suits and Selma will make his UK stage debut as Willy Loman. Olivier Award-winning Sharon D. Clarke and Arinze Kene will also star.

Launching at London Craft Week on 1st May, luxury knitwear brand John Smedley marks its 235th year with a free exhibition at St James's Market Pavilion. A celebration of the oldest knitwear factory in the world, the year-long programme includes a series of exhibitions and talks. On Friday 10th May, managing director and 8th generation Smedley family member Ian Maclean hosts a talk on 'Craft & Form' featuring stonemason Zoe Wilson and ceramic artist Alice Walton. The stories of 10 craftspeople are highlighted, including Tom Sands who hand makes acoustic guitars in North Yorkshire. His talk on Saturday 11th May includes a live guitar performance on one of Tom's own instruments. Following London Craft Week, special events continue at St James's Market Pavilion throughout 2019 and into 2020 plus there's a programme of workshops and retail events each month at John Smedley's London stores on Brook Street, New Cavendish Street and nearby on Jermyn Street.

The chart-topping pop trio of singer-songwriter Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald performs old favourites like 'Relight My Fire' at The O2. No longer a boy band but grown men with families, Take That celebrates three decades in the music business playing longstanding hits 'Everything Changes But You', 'Could It Be Magic' and 'A Million Love Songs' as well as new songs from their most recent albums. The band is renowned for its spectacular live productions with aerialists, circus performers, holograms and robots, and this show will be just as visually impressive. For this 30th anniversary tour they're joined by special guest Rick Astley.

Tacos, tequila and giant frozen margaritas are the order of the day at the Queen of Hoxton Rooftop, which takes the theme Las Mexicanas for its summer residency. The space has been transformed once again, morphing into the secret den of the Luchadores (lady wrestlers). Taking inspiration from the colourful backstreets of San Cristobal in Mexico, the rooftop is now home to a band-stand, a wrestling ring and a backstreet bar, where guests can order a Chilli and Mango Margarita, a Watermelon Paloma or a Mezcal Cantarito to help wash down slow cooked pork and pineapple tacos, fresh nachos and chilli cheese burgers. Throughout the summer, the rooftop will also play host to a number of themed events including feminist embroidery, mezcal insect tasting and Trump piñata making.

Heading off on exciting adventures in their magical flying bath, they give a muddy piglet a shower and put out a fire for a frightened baboon with water at the ready for any emergency. This annual three-day international festival of hip hop and dance theatre, curated by Sadler's Wells associate artist Jonzi D, is back for a 16th year in 2019. Breakin' Convention features performances from some of the world's greatest poppers, lockers, B-boys and B-girls. Taking place every May bank holiday weekend, this world-renowned celebration of hip hop dance culture takes over the whole Sadler's Wells space with dance workshops, graffiti, DJs and freestyle sessions all over the building. On its opening evening, the festival kicks off with an adults-only evening, WORX, where you can enjoy a free cocktail and a night of hip hop cabaret as Breakin' Convention "comes of age" for its sweet 16th.

On the May bank holiday weekend Canopy Market brings together an exciting line-up of British gin distilleries for Gin Under the Canopy. Celebrating gin in all its variety and complexity, the four-day event will offer masterclasses, tastings and workshops along with a central bar where visitors can enjoy the perfect serve. Visitors will be able to sample a number of unique and rare gins from a range of experimental gin makers, including Sandshill Distillery, known for using juniper and coriander to add an authentic and traditional flavour to its gins; Foxhole Spirits, renowned for its sustainable distilling methods; and G&J Distillers, the world's oldest continuous gin distillery. There will also be a number of London-based distilleries along with a curated selection of artisan food stalls serving everything from pastries and cheese to sweet treats and craft beer.

Canalway Cavalcade is a distinctive waterway festival that has been taking place at Little Venice since 1983. Organised by Inland Waterways Association volunteers, there will be an array of boats, trade show stalls and boater gatherings at this festival for water lovers. As well as the boating activities, there will also be Morris dancing, competitions, food, a real ale bar and family-friendly activities making it an enjoyable day out for families. Expanding to a two-day event in 2019, the Queen's Yard Summer Party sees 20 venues across Hackney present a line-up of music and happenings over the May bank holiday weekend. The multi-venue indoor and outdoor event is a celebration of culture and encompasses 25 stages, 20 venues, 30 club brands, three breweries, two boats and a host of vendors, eateries, exhibitors, DJs and live acts. The likes of DJ Boring, Jane Fitz, Bill Brewster and Dave Harvey are on the music line-up while activities include wall climbing experiences, lessons in transformational breathing, and throat singing and yoga classes. The Tweed Run

One of London's most eccentric bike rides - surpassed only by the World Naked Bike Ride - The Tweed Run returns for its annual bike ride this May. The quintessential bike ride requires participants to don their finest tweed attire and set off on a 12-mile scenic route that begins at a secret London location and takes in some of the capital's finest landmarks along the way. Between 750 and 1,000 cyclists, clad in tweed, cycle along Regent Street creating a spectacle so out of the ordinary that crowds form along the route. A pit stop along the way allows for a spot of tea in a fine London square and a picnic break in the park is like a concert and village fete rolled into one. The whole thing ends up with cocktails and a bit of a knees up at The Closing Ceremony when prizes are given for the best dressed participants, bikes and most marvellous moustache.

Soho institution Norman's Coach & Horses becomes a theatre in a stand against Fullers by staging, Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell, in the venue it was originally written and set in. Robert Bathurst, star of award-winning comedy-drama series Cold Feet, stars in a brand new immersive production of the famous Keith Waterhouse play. It tells the musings of London journalist and alcoholic, Jeffrey Bernard, who is locked overnight in The Coach & Horses Soho. It's directed by James Hillier, OFFIE nominee, who brought to life the acclaimed, site-specific productions of Tennessee William's The Hotel Plays which sold out at the Grange, Holborn and Langham Hotel. With extra performances on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the play is followed by late night lock-ins from midnight on Saturdays.

Taking place all over town, in Mayfair Jessica McCormack presents an evening of curated jewellery craftsmanship, knitwear brand Pringle of Scotland puts on a special event and Portuguese craftsmanship is celebrated at Christian Louboutin. At Paperchase Tottenham Court Road stationary brand Caran d'Ache unveils the secrets behind their pencils, Battersea Power Station hosts a large-scale woven installation and Store has dyeing workshops at Coal Drops Yard in Kings Cross. The contemporary face of The Royal Ballet is put forward with revivals of works by Christopher Wheeldon and Crystal Pite and a world premiere by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. Christopher Wheeldon's Within the Golden Hour, created for San Francisco Ballet in 2008 and first performed by The Royal Ballet in 2016, is based around seven couples and includes "larky and spectacular duets" and "a dreamy adagio" (The Guardian). Pite's Flight Pattern, revived for the first time, uses Gorecki's familiar music and a large dance ensemble to reflect on migration. Between them, a new work created by the acclaimed choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui has its premiere, showcasing his first piece for The Royal Ballet.

The second Affordable Art Fair of the year in Hampstead is the little sister of the Battersea Park original which occurs in spring and autumn. Held in a marquee on the Lower Fairground Site on Hampstead Heath over a May weekend, there are over 100 galleries under one roof, exhibiting paintings, original prints, sculpture, etchings and photography from both established names and emerging talents - all priced from £100 to £6,000. It's the ninth consecutive year the Affordable Art Fair has come to Hampstead in its 14-year history with artists and gallerists presenting workshops and talks. Thursday is the Late View, an evening of art and activities with music and wine as well as art and sculpture demonstrations.

Clive Rowe stars as Mr Badger in the hip hop musical adaptation of In the Willows, a new musical retelling from the award-winning Metta Theatre. The Olivier award-winning actor, "the nation's favourite pantomime dame" and star of BBC's The Story of Tracey Beaker, is joined by X Factor favourite Seann Miley Moore (as Duck) and Let It Shine performer Matt Knight (who plays Chief Weasel). With spectacular street dance choreographed by the award-winning Rhimes Lecointe, associate choreographer for Zoo Nation, the production also stars deaf street dancer Chris Fonseca and incorporates British Sign Language into the choreography.

Staged at the Royal Court Theatre, the play is a satire about racism within different east Asian ethnic groups. In Singapore, Clearday is a successful cosmetic start-up, but when the company's latest product - a skin whitening cream - is advertised online, it goes viral for all the wrong reasons. The grand spectacle of Mexican Lucha Libre makes American wrestling look as dramatic as a rained-out cricket match. The masked wrestlers - many of whom do not reveal their identities throughout their careers - are the heroes of their respective barrios, celebrated as representing the spirit of the Mexican poor. The high-flying moves require a degree of gymnastic showmanship that is way beyond the steroid pumped pseudo-athletes of WWE. The whole spectacle decamps to London for two days this May, as Roundhouse is transformed into a retro-style Mexican arena. As well as the shows, there will also be authentic Mexican food, tequila and beer.

Feta fans and cheddar cheerleaders can unite this May at the We Love Cheese festival. Taking place at Battersea Power Station, the two-day dairy-fuelled occasion will welcome cheese sellers from around the globe. A large selection of stalls will sell all different varieties of cheese as well as bread, charcuterie, olives and cheesecake. Producers will be on hand to discuss the goods and there will be pairing suggestions at pop-up bars from beer and wine specialists. Street food will come from the likes of the Raclette Brothers, Mac to the Future and The Toasty Badger, and this year there will also be a wine fair led by resident urban winery and kitchen, Vagabond. Further activities include music and entertainment, live performances, a craft area for the little ones and a Wheel of Cheese offering the chance to win some special prizes.

An annual favourite for families the Barnes Children's Literature Festival returns in May giving you the chance to meet top authors, hear writers talk about their working methods and pose questions to your favourite wordsmiths. They always manage to secure big name authors and 2019 will be the 5th year for what has now become London's largest children's literature festival. Taking place in various venues in Barnes, stalls are set up next to the duck pond and a big top temporary tent hosts some of the events. This year's line up includes Lauren Child, Michael Rosen, Steve Antony, Horrid Henry creator Francesca Simon, Gruffalo illustrator Axel Scheffler, Mog creator and Barnes resident, Judith Kerr. As well as readings and book talks there are workshops on Matilda the Musical, model making by Aardman Animations and free fireside folktales from local theatre company Shadow Road Productions.

One of the highlights of the day is the Good Boy Dog School headed by TV personality Dima Yeremenko, who appeared on 'Britain's Got Talent' and 'That Dog Can Dance!', presenting new routines at 12 noon and 2pm. If you want to enter your pooch, competition categories include 'A bit of ruff' for mixed breeds, miniatures and puppies, all judged by Mahny Djahanguiri from Dogamahny and Rob Alleyne of Dog Owners club who can be seen on BBC3's 'Dog Borstal'. A new production of Purcell's masterpiece, Dido and Aeneas, gives a contemporary staging of the tragic love story for teenagers and adults, in a first ever collaboration between English National Opera and the Unicorn. This production, faithful to the Baroque score, refocuses the piece so that it is seen through Belinda's eyes, the only child of Dido. A teenager in a big city, Belinda sees her mother - heroine, feminist icon, modern parent - slowly start to fall apart, with tragic consequences. Performed by a company of twenty-two, the three principal singers are Rachael Lloyd as Dido, Njabulo Madlala as Aeneas and Eyra Norman as Belinda.

In honour of this year's RHS Chelsea Flower Show, The Ivy Chelsea Garden has been transformed with a striking Flower Meadow installation. Sure to be a hit with the city's Instagrammers, the installation sees the restaurant's exterior adorned with yellow, pink, blue and lilac flowers, interspersed with verdant green foliage. Once inside, guests are greeted by a beautiful floral ceiling before entering the dining room, which has nods to wild flowers throughout. Additionally, the restaurant has created two bespoke floral cocktails for the occasion: The Silent Sparkle, made using Silent Pool Gin, ginger & lemongrass cordial, lime juice and Ivy Champagne, garnished with fragrant dried lavender; and The Camomile Garden, incorporating Silent Pool Gin, honey water & Fever Tree Indian Tonic, complemented with a spritz of camomile aromatics and garnished with kaffir lime leaf and orange.

The Sci-Fi-London Film Festival lands this May offering right days of film, live music and immersive experiences. The festival will open with the UK premiere of Perfect, which sends audiences into a science fiction world like no other when a young man is sent to a futuristic retreat for therapy. Other films on the line-up include Shed of the Dead, After We Leave, The Tangle and Zoo-Head. The festival will close with the world premiere of The Rizen: Possession, directed by Matt Mitchell and starring Julian Rhind-Tutt, Sarine Sofair, Adrian Edmondson and Sally Phillips. Hans Werner Henze's final opera, Phaedra, is brought to life by the Royal Opera's Jette Parker Young Artists and is performed by professionals at the start of their careers who have been working on the Royal Opera House programme for two years. Staged in the Linbury Theatre, the production re-imagines the Classical myth of Phaedra and her stepson Hippolytus (Hippolyt), placing them at the centre of the action. A story of desire, self-loathing and jealousy, the piece is directed by Noa Naamat, conducted by Edmund Whitehead and sung in German with English surtitles.

Opening the 2019 season, Thornton Wilder's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Our Town, comes to the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre this May. Directed by Ellen McDougall - artistic director of the Gate Theatre with previous credits including Ivan and the Dogs and Othello - the play celebrates what it means to be human, looking at the bonds that hold communities together through the ordinary lives of families in small town America over a period of 12 years. A major centre-wide exhibition presented in a festival style at the Barbican Centre, AI: More than Human delves into our relationship with artificial intelligence, exploring how it could potentially revolutionise our lives. Artists, scientist and researchers have come together to present an unprecedented survey of the creative and scientific developments in artificial intelligence. Through a programme of talks, debates, concerts and screenings, the public are invited to experience AI's capabilities first-hand. The programme includes a discussion with BBC Radio 3 broadcasters on how AI is impacting our creativity, a conversation with author Ian McEwan and professor Murray Shanahan about how much of what used to be make-believe is now becoming a reality, and a screening of Greg Kohs' documentary AlphaGo, which follows the first formal match of a computer programme when competing with a human in the ancient Chinese game of Go. The event will also look at the future of food, the impact of 'deepfakes' and the next generation of automation in the workplace.

Running concurrently with this year's Chelsea Flower Show, The Mayfair Flower Show is sketch's edgier, more stylish offering. Taking over the entire building, the spectacular exhibition gives the beautiful venue an even more glamorous makeover with some of London's most talented florists decorating the space. Upon arrival, guests are greeted by a bold floral framework courtesy of Rebel Rebel Flowers before stepping into a fantasy mural installation by Figa & Co, Timorous Beasties and Matter of Stuff in the entrance hall. The reception area has been taken over by Jam Jar Flowers and Matter of Stuff with a remodelled stained-glass window created using pressed flowers as an allegory to William Morris' arts & crafts movement while the East Bar and Pods see Carly Rogers Flowers pay homage to the futuristic visions of Jane Webb and Insley & Nash create a custom sky fabric to sit above the garden. As well as the exhibition, there is a floral-inspired menu in the Lecture Room & Library and a specially themed afternoon tea in The Gallery, featuring a range of botanically-inspired cakes and pastries.

Displayed in the Natural History Museum's Jerwood Gallery, and timed to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing, Museum of the Moon invites you to have a close-up encounter with the moon. The awe-inspiring large-scale artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram puts a six-metre spherical sculpture centre stage. Featuring high-resolution NASA imagery of the moon's surface and a surround-sound composition by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award-winning composer Dan Jones, the artwork offers a new perspective on the moon as well as a space for reflection. To tie in with the installation there are space-themed events including an after-hours gig from art-rock band Public Service Broadcasting to mark the exhibit's opening, yoga under the Moon, lunar-themed fitness classes, space-related talks and a special Lates event.

Two years in the making, a new Children's Garden at Kew opens to the public on 18th May 2019. Covering 10,000 metres squared, it's the size of 40 tennis courts and includes lots of natural elements. A four metre high canopy walk is wrapped around a 200-year-old oak tree and more than 100 mature trees fill the landscape including ginkgo, pines, sweet chestnut, beech and eucalyptus trees. Designed around the elements that plants need to survive: earth, air, sun and water, the space encourages children to play as they learn. In the earth garden is a giant sand pit with a play hut village surrounded by bamboo plants and tunnel slides. Air is represented by giant windmill flowers, pollen spheres, hammocks, swings and trampolines. A ring of sunflowers, water pumpsand stepping stones complete the life cycle of plants. Aimed at children aged 2 to 12, a giant log scramble challenges older kids to get across to the leaning tower without touching the ground.

Projects propose alternative food futures, explore urban farming and dig in to the social side of eating. Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2019, Clerkenwell Design Week is a three-day festival showcasing the creativity, social relevance and advancements in technology behind design. Taking place in various locations in Clerkenwell, from Spa Fields to Farringdon, the festival includes Design Fields, a large-scale curated exhibition of contemporary design, and British Collection, showcasing up and coming designers in the Crypt of St James's Church. There are literally hundreds of industry events and showcases for design ideas, from architecture practices opening their studios to street spectacles. Look out for Once Upon A Time, graphic installations inspired by their locations, and Decade, a trail of 10, three metre high candle-like beacons. For Clerkenwell Design Week 2019, Fritz Hansen presents Shaping Reality Through Time, an exploration of Fritz Hansen's design evolution at the Zaha Hadid Gallery in Goswell Road. Told through the series of chairs produced since Danish cabinet maker Fritz Hansen got a trade license in 1872, the exhibition includes anniversary pieces, early examples of the signature laminated technology still in use today, original prototypes and limited editions, alongside newer pieces launched at this year's Milan Design Week and shown in the UK for the first time. The exhibition opens with a talk between Head of Design at Fritz Hansen, Christian Andresen, and Zaha Hadid Design Director, Maha Kutay.

A recreation of the oldest surviving manga bookshop in Tokyo comes to the British Museum as it stages the largest exhibition of manga ever to take place outside of Japan. Literally meaning 'pictures run riot' this narrative art form has crossed over into other forms of cultural expression, including 'cosplay' dressing up. Contemporary manga and digital anime are linked to their historic roots as Manga gives us a chance to see the origins of modern Japanese cartoons and - spoiler alert - they're older than you think. The Handscrolls of Frolicking Animals (Choju giga), for example, dating back to 1200 AD, is considered by some to be the foundation of modern manga. A major new exhibition at Kensington Palace, Victoria: Woman and Crown delves into the Queen's private life, looking beyond her carefully managed public persona. Hosted in conjunction with the 200th anniversary of Queen Victoria's birth, the exhibition will explore how she balanced her roles as a wife and mother with her position of the matriarch of an expanding empire. Rare pieces of clothing from her wardrobe, including a simple cotton petticoat and a pair of fashionable silver boots, show a stark contrast to the black gowns she became famous for wearing in later life and give an insight into her younger years while examples of her personal diaries explore her complex love affair with India and her friendship with Maharajah Duleep. This exhibition runs concurrently with Victoria: A Royal Childhood.

Unearthing the histories of the 'lost rivers' in - and beneath - the city streets.

Old Father Thames, gently flowing through the city centre, is no secret to most visitors to London but less is known about the other rivers in - and under - the city. The Museum of London Docklands digs up the fascinating stories behind London's Secret Rivers, unearthing the histories of the 'lost rivers' buried beneath the streets and incorporated into the city's sewer system. Ever heard of the Effra, Fleet, Neckinger, Tyburn, Walbrook and Westbourne? Discover their stories of industry, development, effluence and sacred activities at this flowing exhibition which also looks at restoration on the Lea and Wandle. It even exposes the secrets of Thames itself - its foreshore providing a constant source of fascination and revelation for mudlarkers.

 
 
 

All Points East

A rocking ten day summer music festival.

After a successful debut in summer 2018, All Points East is back for a rocking ten day summer music festival, taking place over two May and June weekends at Victoria Park. To kick things off, there's a three day music festival with appearances from headliners The Chemical Brothers, Hot Chip and Primal Scream on Friday as well as Christine and the Queens on Sunday. It's followed by a four day community-focused midweek programme of comedy, food and outdoor cinema. Then comes a long weekend of three back to back shows with Bring Me The Horizon, the rock band from Sheffield, headlining on Friday 31st May while American indie folk band Bon Iver bring the festival to a close on Sunday.

Hogarth & The Art of Noise

Boxing and brothels, breaking and entering are explored through sound.

Explore the use of sound in William Hogarth's art as the Foundling Museum stages the first exhibition dedicated to the way the 18th century artist used sound in his art. With the masterpiece, The March of the Guards to Finchley, as its focus, Hogarth & The Art of Noise reveals the artist's innovative use of sound. Including a specially-commissioned immersive soundscape by musician and producer, Martyn Ware, the exhibition reveals how Hogarth used the sounds of London to capture contemporary 18th-century life. Boxing and brothels, breaking and entering are just some of the themes that come up. Complementing the exhibition is a first floor display by contemporary artist, Nicola Bealing, whose paintings have been inspired by 18th century broadside ballads and by Hogarth himself.

 
 
 

Leonardo da Vinci: A Life In Drawing

To celebrate Leonardo da Vinci, who died 500 years ago, the Royal Collection, which owns the world's "most eye-popping hoard of his graphic works" (The Guardian), is staging 12 simultaneous exhibitions nationwide. While other host cities display 12 drawings, London gets over 200 sketches in Leonardo da Vinci: A Life in Drawing, on display at The Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace, from May. The beauty of these preparatory works is that they are well preserved, not restored or painted over nor executed by his assistants. "They are pure clear windows on his mind," says The Guardian, "many with his notes in his reversed handwriting interspersed among the images." A wonderful way to celebrate the great Renaissance artist, scientist, engineer and inventor.

 
 
 

Untangling the Tracks

The London Transport Museum looks at the history of the Thameslink train line with its new exhibition, Untangling the Tracks. Tracing the history of the route from 1866 through to the recent £7 billion modernisation programme, the exhibition shows how the line has developed over the years and how modern infrastructure allows for millions of passengers to travel on the route each year - something that would have been an unimaginable feat for the Victorians who founded and ran the original railway. Visitors will be able to discover how the modernisation programme has transformed the route and untangled the tracks, which now run into a completely rebuilt London Bridge station. A number of vintage transport posters also go on display and the exhibition provides the chance to solve and Untangling the Tracks puzzle by navigating trains into the correct platforms.

Running concurrently with Victoria: Woman and Crown, Victoria: A Royal Childhood is one of two exhibitions being held by Kensington Palace to mark the 200th anniversary of Queen Victoria's birth. Held in the very rooms where Victoria was born, grew up and experienced her primitive years as monarch, this new permanent display explores her early years. Items such as a poignant scrapbook of mementos created by her German governess, Baroness Lehzen, will show how a young princess developed into the independent and iconic head of state that we remember today.

Bringing a taste of Andalusian carnival spirit to London, Spanish festival Feria De Londres returns for its third year on the late May bank holiday weekend. Colourful casetas will pop up in the aptly named Bernie Spain Gardens on the South Bank and will serve a whole manner of Spanish tapas and refreshing cocktails alongside a programme of tasting workshops, Flamenco dance shows, interactive activities and live Spanish music. Dancers from London's best flamenco schools will lead the Sevillana dance lessons and flamenco rhythm workshops, which will include family friendly activities like face painting, fan making and kids flamenco dance lessons. Drinks on offer include ice-cold Iberian beers and fine regional wines alongside Feria cocktails and sherry tasting masterclasses.

Taking over Old Spitalfields Market for three days, the festival has been curated by Sham Mahabir, the man behind the popular Trinidadian Limin bar and restaurant in Spitalfields, and will show that there's more to Caribbean food than just jerk chicken and rice and peas. A line-up of innovative dishes from Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, Jamaica and Guyana will be served up alongside island rums from Plantation and a programme of music and dance from Notting Hill Carnival's Bacchanalia Mas band.

The Foodies Festival returns to Syon Park this spring bringing MasterChef finalists and famous chefs to leafy west London on the second Bank Holiday weekend in May. This year's line-up features a range of culinary elite has yet to be announced but last year saw the likes of Matt Tebutt and Michelin-starred chefs Atul Kocchar, Glynn Purnell and Josh Eggleton at the Chefs Theatre. Great British Bake Off winner Sophie Faldo joined finalists Steven Carter-Bailey and Kate Lyon in the Cake & Bake Theatre. With workshops, over 20 street food outlets, the Pimms Teapot and cookery classes for kids as well as garden games and crafting there's a lot to get your teeth stuck into.

Families can enjoy films in the open air thanks to Luna Kids Cinema who put up the big screen at Dulwich Park and Hampton Court Palace this spring and summer. Screenings kick off with a special May half term run in Dulwich Park, on the East Lawns next to the bowling green, where Moana, Mary Poppins Returns and new film release Dumbo are among the 27 screenings. Just released this year, popular children's films include The Lego Movie 2, Disney's remake of Aladdin and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. There will also be exclusive screenings of The Gruffalo, The Highway Rat, Zog and the brand new Peppa Pig movie - Peppa Pig: Festival of Fun. Later in the summer, from 14th to 18th August, the projector moves to Hampton Court for 15 screenings including high flying adventure How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World and computer caper Ralph Breaks the Internet.

The Canadian dance company, Cas Public, uses dancer Cai Glover's hearing impairment as a point of inspiration in this new work for both children, from the age of five upwards, and adults. Staged at the Royal Opera House's Linbury Theatre, the 50 minute show plays with music - Beethoven's Ninth Symphony - and silence to question how we capture the grandeur of this music if, like the great composer, our hearing is impaired.

GALA mainstays Crazy P return to play live with DJs Raw Silk and Dan Shake playing more disco sounds along with notorious digger Nick The Record. New for 2019, Peckham's newest culinary hotspot, Levan, hosts an on-site restaurant along with food from Made of Dough, Other Side Fried and Only Jerkin who specialise in big Caribbean flavours. Bringing four days of original film, Sundance London returns to Picturehouse Central this year. The UK spinoff of America's indie film festival founded by Robert Redford in 1987 will showcase films screened at the Utah-based film festival in January. With screenings celebrating independent filmmakers, the festival presents a series of both UK and world premieres. This year's festival kicks off with a screening of Late Night starring Emma Thompson while other films on the line-up include The Last Tree, which follows a British boy of Nigerian heritage when he moves from rural Lincolnshire to London; The Nightingale, telling the story of a young Irish convict bent on revenge; and Corporate Animals, a comedy horror starring Demi Moore. A number of the directors and actors will be in attendance at the screenings. There's also the return of the surprise film feature, with the film only being revealed when the opening credits roll.

One of the pioneers of Abstract Expressionism, Lee Krasner, is the subject of a solo exhibition at the Barbican Art Gallery which tells the story of a formidable artist whose importance has often been eclipsed by her marriage to Jackson Pollock. The first retrospective of her work in Europe for over 50 years, Lee Krasner: Living Colour features nearly 100 works - many on show in the UK for the first time - from across her 50-year career. Early self-portraits, charcoal life drawings and impressive large-scale abstract paintings are accompanied by rare photography and film in an elegant exhibition design by David Chipperfield Architects.

Two artists who have lived with chronic illnesses explore how debilitating disease can shape the way we think about the body, family and identity at the Wellcome Collection. In Misbehaving Bodies photographer Jo Spence documents her diagnosis of breast cancer, her unflinching photographs are displayed alongside Oreet Ashery's award-winning mini-series Revisiting Genesis, 2016, which explores death and dying in the digital era. Exploring the therapeutic potential of photography, Jo Spence's The Picture of Health? 1982-86 shows her journey from diagnosis to treatment over a four-year period. Combining moving image and performance, Oreet Ashery uses augmented reality gravestones and avatars to comment on vulnerability, mourning and loss.

 
 
 

London Bridge City: Summer by the River

London's largest free festival brings music, theatre, film and food to the riverside

London's largest free festival, the London Bridge City's Summer by the River transforms the riverside stretch into a summer hub of live entertainment, food and drink. Bringing a touch of The Hamptons to London Bridge City, the area gets a new, stylish shoreside look. Launching on Thursday 30th May, Chaps Choir gets the festival off to a flying start with their joyful choral pop classics at The Scoop. The outdoor amphitheatre plays host to free open air cinema, big screen summer sports, live comedy and music performances. Between 7th August and 1st September, the free Open Air Theatre returns with a new family production the swashbuckling tale of 'The Sea Queen' and Shakespeare's classic romantic comedy 'Twelfth Night'. Pop-up guru Jimmy Garcia and his team run the Bar by the River and The BBQ Club while Look Mum No Hands returns for a third year in a row to transform The Pier area. Expanding to include the table tennis, the festival also stages a new pop-up area in Hay's Galleria where you can hear musicians perform live.

A brand-new music event and the first major music festival to take place in Lloyd Park, Croydon, The Ends will see the likes of De La Soul, Kojey, Maleek, Kranium and Grammy Award-winner J Balvin take to the stage in June. Nas will headline on Friday, Wizkid on Saturday and Damian Marley on Sunday. The festival organisers have also worked in partnership with Croydon Music and Arts Council to focus on home grown talent, and The Croydon Council Stage will provide a platform for 14-30-year-old musicians hoping to become the next big thing.

Peckham Levels is inviting the public into its lower floors for the Peckham Levels Open Studio Weekend. While the site's upper levels have become known for their diverse line-up of street food outlets, bars, and health and beauty venues, the lower levels are only accessible to a myriad of local creatives, who use the space as workshops and studios. For this weekend-long event of creativity, the makers will open their doors to give a unique insight into their craft with a series of workshops, shopping opportunities, and yoga and dance showcases. There will be the chance to take part in portrait drawing and festival glitter workshops, and to purchase items such as prints, paintings, t-shirts and handmade jewellery.
