Kettner's Townhouse

Lovingly restored by Soho House, Kettner's reopened after a two year refurbishment in January 2018, combining a French restaurant, Champagne bar and a townhouse hotel. The original 18th century spiral staircase remains, leading up to 33 bedrooms. Each room has been individually designed in a 1920s French boudoir style. V intage chandeliers hang from the ceilings, rooms have antique sinks and vanities as well as original Georgian timber floorboards and fireplaces. Specially made furniture, green velvet scalloped headboards and deep button armchairs sit alongside hand-painted Georgian-inspired wallpaper and William Morris prints. Bathrooms have rainforest showers, some with freestanding bathtubs, and tiling inspired by French lace, come with Cowshed products. If you really want to stay in style, book the (£800 a night) Grade II-listed Jacobean Suite and you get large emperor bed, your own private entrance and a freestanding copper bath.

The second London hotel from the Dorsett Hotel group, £21 million is being spent on this 13-storey city hotel next to the 18th century St Botolph Church and above Aldgate tube station. With 267 guest rooms, a restaurant, fitness centre and meeting rooms, on the site of what used to be The Matrix building, the Dorsett City hotel is a stylish 4 star hotel designed by Dexter Moren Associates, architects for the Shangri-La hotel in The Shard. One look at sister hotel, the Dorsett Shepherds Bush, shows the kind of finish and furnishings you can expect at the second London hotel from the group.

Designed by Charles Fitzroy-Doll, who was also responsible for the design of RMS Titanic, The Principal London originally opened as a hotel in 1898 and s tands out on Russell Square thanks its striking terracotta exterior. While four British queens - Elizabeth I, Mary II, Anne and Victoria - guard the entrance, inside t he 334-room hotel is a bronze dragon (find it on the landing of the main staircase) , 'Lucky George' - the Titanic had an exact replica. Rooms have a contemporary interior and lavish feel, designed by Tara Bernard and Russell Sage, and provide a practical place to stay, with custom-made beds and work desks. At the heart of the hotel is the magnificently restored Palm Court. For something more casual, try Burr & Co., and for glamorous nights out head to Fitz's bar for a cocktail or two.

Swanky private member's club Soho House turns the old BBC headquarters in White City into a 47-bedroom hotel. At the very heart of Television Centre, in The Helios - the building's original Grade II listed central ring - are 45 bedrooms, supplemented by three floors of club space, an Electric Cinema, The Allis, a restaurant at ground floor level, 25,000 square foot gym and - a trademark for Soho House - a rooftop pool (these top their hotels in New York, Chicago and Berlin but for London examples see Shoreditch House and The Ned). The terrace and swimming pool on the roof of the new office building are in a prime spot overlooking the Television Centre forecourt.

Taking over a Grade II listed former church, L'Oscar is one of London's most extravagant new hotels. Designed by French architect Jacques Garcia - the man responsible for Hotel Costes in Paris - the 39-room hotel is a lavish, sexy affair with leather wallpaper, tasselled velvet chairs, loud patterns and a bold colour palette. Original features such as tiled floors and fireplaces decorated with scenes from the bible remain while in one room a clock tower has been transformed into a bathroom. The building's 1903 octagonal chapel is now home to a restaurant run by Tony Fleming with a bar sitting where the organ used to be.

Taking five Georgian townhouses and combining them into one hotel, The Academy underwent a multi-million-pound interior refurbishment in 2018 and became part of the prestigious Small Luxury Hotels of the World collection. Renowned New York-based designer Alexandra Champalimaud oversaw the refurbishment of the 50 elegant guest rooms and public spaces, blending modern and vintage styles with a nod to the lives and loves of the Bloomsbury Set who lived and worked in the area in the early 20th Century. The lower ground floor houses The Refectory, an intimate breakfast room and function space while The Alchemy Bar, re-housed on the ground floor, leads through to a beautiful garden. Here you'll find Mr. Ma's Tea House Spa where you can enjoy traditional Asian body therapies including a hot medicinal herbal footbath, Chinese reflexology or Tuina - an invigorating and rhythmical acupressure to energise and balance the body.

Smack bang in the middle of the West End with Soho and Covent Garden are right on the doorstep, the 121 room Assembly Hotel is a fun, affordable place to stay. Oh and there's a giant bunny wearing a provocative leather collar in each room just crying out for a photo op. Designed by Scott Brownrigg architects, each room is inspired by the works of London designers Stella McCartney, Gareth Pugh and Alexander McQueen, who studied at Central Saint Martin's. Rooms are stripped back, focusing on the things that really matter - comfy beds, soft fluffy pillows, a walk-in power shower, good sound proofing, air conditioning and super strong WI-FI. Sizes go from snug - perfect for one, fine for two as long as you really like each other - to d en, the most spacious room, complete with great views of London. It's the first i ndependent hospitality venture from Criterion Capital, the largest landowner between Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square who also own the Trocadero. Launched in summer 2018, a full restaurant and rooftop bar opens on the tenth floor later in the year, offering floor to ceiling views across London over landmarks like the London Eye and The Shard.

In a six-storey glass structure that's part of the One Blackfriars development, Bankside Hotel offers a sleek and modern outlook close to Blackfriars Bridge. Modern mid-century interiors are by interior designer (and former film set producer) Dayna Lee who jointly heads up LA-based Powerstrip Studio. Serving both as a hotel, with 161 light and airy bedrooms, and a community hub (a niche area the Hoxton hotel pioneered), there's a focus on creativity and art. Lee Streeton, previously at 45 Jermyn Street and Brown's Hotel, is head chef of the in-house Art Yard Bar & Kitchen, an all-day dining restaurant and bar. With both the Tate Modern and the Hayward Gallery as neighbours, the hotel has its own large 'white cube' gallery and a function space with capacity for 120 people as well as an in-house fitness centre and a 78-cover restaurant and bar with an outdoor terrace for eating out in warmer months.

Belmond, the luxury hotel group behind Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons, is backing the £28 million investment project in The Cadogan, the prestigious hotel on Sloane Street where Lillie Langtry courted the future King of England. Built in 1887 in the Queen Anne style, The Cadogan was also the location of Oscar Wilde's infamous arrest - if only the walls of could talk. Building on this colourful history, the historic property is undergoing a two-year renovation project which reduces the number of rooms and suites from 64 to 54 and adds a new restaurant by Adam Handling with its own entrance on 21 Pont Street, opening out onto Sloane Street with views of Cadogan Place Gardens. Interior design is by the London office of GA Design International, the firm behind some of the most exclusive hotels and restaurants around the world including the Corinthia Hotel in London.

A new build block among the high rises of Canary Wharf, Lincoln Plaza London is part of the upscale Curio Collection by Hilton. Drawing inspiration from the area's industrial past, the lobby of the 129 room hotel is decorated with polished concrete floors, a steel feature wall and steel-framed windows. In house dining options include Mr. Todiwala's Kitchen, a Pan-Indian restaurant from celebrated chef Cyrus Todiwala or the more casual Food Store where you can eat in or stock up on provisions at the deli. Cocktail bar Jack Speak offers an year-round outdoor terrace and an extensive selection of rum and gin drinks in a setting that is a playful twist on a 19th century British Navy Officers' Wardroom.
