London area of W12 guide
What to do and where to stay in London's W12 neighbourhood
Shepherd's Bush and White City make up W12, whose new centrepiece is the imposing Westfield Shopping Centre, the largest mall of its kind in Europe. With almost 300 shops, 50 restaurants and a 14-screen cinema, Westfield bravely ignored the recession to open its doors in 2008, and has done a lot to help regenerate the area. The BBC also has its White City base in W12, while on the north western side of Shepherd's Bush Green the popular Shepherd's Bush market can be found. The name Shepherd's Bush is thought to have originated from the use of the common land as a resting point for shepherds on their way to Smithfield Market in the City. W11 has a large Australian and New Zealand population, while the Polish, Somali, West Indian, Lebanese, Syrian, Iranian, Irish, Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities have strong ties to the area. Loftus Road, the home of Queens Park Rangers, has its home in Shepherd's Bush, while Bush Hall and the Empire remain popular theatres and live music venues.
