It was only a matter of time before the Menier Chocolate Factory's critically-acclaimed A Little Night Music followed in the footsteps of Sunday in the Park with George, Little Shop of Horrors and La Cage aux Folles to reach the glittering lights of the West End. It's rare for a musical to compete on the same level as straight theatre but, under the direction of Trevor Nunn, the script and characters fuse with the music to delve beneath the surface and find the inner pulse of the story. Stephen Sondeim's charged score, written in waltz time, sends currents of sizzling passions and heart-felt desires through midsummer in fin de siecle Sweden, and a formidable cast rises expertly to the warmth, wit and woe of love it all its guises. The Chocolate Factory stars are coming along for the ride to the Garrick Theatre, so you'll get to see the production in all its glory with Hannah Waddington as the fading but delectable Desiree, Alexander Hanson as her unassuming old flame and Maureen Lipman's genuinely funny Madame Armfeldt.
