THIS EVENT ENDED ON THE 25TH MAY 2015
Back for its sixth year, Alchemy, a festival of South Asian culture has grown to become the largest festival of Indian and South Asian culture outside India. Covering comedy, theatre, dance and music, highlights of this year's festival include appearances from tabla musician Zakir Hussain, Bollywood singer Shreya Ghoshal, and Meera Syal who discusses her first novel in sixteen years, The House of Hidden Mothers. On the stage, Indian play, 'Nirbhaya', investigates gender-based violence following the tragic events of the 2012 Delhi bus rape while 'Synchronised' draws ticket-holders off-site to a pool-based production combining synchronised swimming, kathak dance, live music and song. The Jaipur Literature Festival, contemporary kathak dance projects and free interactive installation Pother Golpo - Street Stories of Bangladesh and Dil Phaink are all part of the colourful mix. There's street food inspired by the Alchemy countries in the Festival Village and the Southbank Centre Square by Kerb Market and children's show Arabian Nights (23rd and 24th May) tells the story of Ali Baba, Aladdin and a genie.
