Architecture Of WarThe Imperial War Museum reopens following a six-month closure on 29th July 2013 with a large-scale exhibition which explores different ways that artists have recorded the impact of war, featuring works spanning nearly a century, from the first world war to the current day. Exhibits in Architecture of War include Henry Carr's 1944 painting 'Liberation' and Paul Hogarth's drawing for the Berlin Wall in 1981 as well as relative moments of calm as depicted in a watercolour by David Baxter of The Dining Room, Hotel Christol, Boulogne, 1918, which was once the headquarters of the Red Cross in France. More recent conflicts are also represented through Angus Boulton's photographs of abandoned Soviet military bases in East Germany and Paul Seawright's images documenting the aftermath of war in Afghanistan.

The IWM London, the flagship Imperial War Museum which offers a thoughtful look at what day-to-day life is like for both citizens and soldiers in times of conflict, re-opened on 19th July 2014 with a dramatic new atrium space by Fosters + Partners, and new permanent First World War Galleries, a highlight of which is a trench complete with periscopes, sounds and projections recreating what life was like behind the front line on the Western Front.
