Blue Stockings is one of three new plays receiving their world premieres at Shakespeare's Globe this summer. Written by Jessica Swale, Artistic Director of Red Handed, the London-based theatre company which she set up seven years ago, the play is set in 1896 in Girton College, Cambridge, England's first residential college for women. The story of four young women and the hardships they face, from economic difficulty to the distractions of men and radical politics, is set against the backdrop of womens suffrage, a fitting subject in the year that marks the centenary of the death of Emily Wilding Davison who famously ran in front of the King's horse during the Epsom Derby. John Dove directs.

About Shakespeare's Globe Theatre

This replica of the Shakespeare's 16th century theatre, reconstructed just 200 yards from its original site, is the brainchild of American actor and director Sam Wanamaker. Built in wood and thatch, using techniques from 400 years ago, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre opened in 1996. More about Shakespeare's Globe Theatre
