Damned By DespairThe award-winning Irish playwright and poet Frank McGuinness directs a new National Theatre version of Damned by Despair, written by the great seventeenth-century Spanish dramatist Tirso de Molina. Obsessed with his own salvation, the hermit Paulo dedicates himself to ten years of intense penance, but as his faith wavers, the Devil convinces him that he shares his fate with Enrico, a notorious Neapolitan gangster with a one-way ticket to perpetual damnation. An enraged Paulo seeks vengeance against God and assembles a band of embittered outlaws to rival Enrico's troupe. With both men surrounded by escalating crime, the possibility of redemption still hands tantalisingly close. McGuinness has a strong track record of adapting literary classics, and will no doubt bring a fresh take on this subversive and riotous exploration of faith, revenge and love in 1635 Italy. Directed by Bijan Sheibani.

About National Theatre: Olivier Theatre

The imposing theatre on the South Bank is the spiritual centre of London's theatreland, and the heart of the British theatrical tradition. More about National Theatre: Olivier Theatre
