David Hockney: Drawing from LifeThe National Portrait Gallery London is temporarily closed from Wednesday 18th March 2020 until further notice, in order to help contain the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Widely acknowledged for his expertise in drawing, David Hockney's superb portraits are put under the spotlight at this intimate and exquisite National Portrait Gallery exhibition showing around 150 works. David Hockney: Drawing from Life focuses on four sitters close to him - three of his closest friends: Celia Birtwell, Gregory Evans and Maurice Payne as well as his mother. When he didn't have a model, he drew himself. His self-portraits start as early as the age of 17 and continue to this day, sometimes using three mirrors in one sitting, another time positioning himself, nude, across the table from Picasso. His admiration for masters old and modern, from Holbein to Matisse, is evident in his neo-Classical style line drawings of the 1970s and the 'camera lucida' drawings of the late 1990s. Always open to new technology, in the 1980s he used composite Polaroids to 'draw with the camera', as he described it, creating Cubist depictions of form which paid homage to Picasso. More recently years, he has used iPhone and iPad apps to create vast landscapes. Stand and stare at the video of the artist turning the pages of his latest sketchbook showing landscapes of Normandy drawn in brown ink - the same method favoured by Rembrandt. You'll soon see why The Guardian reviewer gave the exhibition five stars, calling it "the most dazzling display of his art I have ever seen".

About National Portrait Gallery

The National Portrait Gallery houses portraits of significant figures from the late 15th century to the present day. This isn't the place to come for serious works of exceptional artistic merit - the overriding aim of the National Portrait Gallery is to reflect the status of the sitter, not the artist - but where else in London could you hope to find The Beatles, Henry VIII, Sir Richard Branson and JK Rowling all hanging out together? The appeal of this gallery (opened in 1856) rests simply in its comprehensive commemoration of British history from the late 15th century to the present day through the medium of portraiture.
