David Lynch: The Factory PhotographsDavid Lynch is best known for his surrealist films which have earned him four Oscar nominations. However, the American film and television director is something of a Renaissance man and his CV spans the far-ranging job titles of visual artist, musician, photographer and occasional actor.
The series of photographs to be shown at the Photographers' Gallery reveal his self-confessed love of industry, machinery, man-made objects, and 'people hard at work'. He once said that if he were offered a choice of visiting Disneyland or an abandoned factory, that there would be no choice.
The dark and brooding series of black and white photographs were taken at derelict factories in Germany, Poland, New York and England, among other places. His unique cinematic style is much in evidence in his depictions of labyrinths of passages, detritus and decaying manmade structures slowly being taken over by nature. Lynch has said that the appeal of the abandoned factory is that "it seems like such a great place to set a story", underlining the point that he's still very much wearing his film director hat when taking photographs.

About Photographers' Gallery

The Photographers' Gallery - Britain's leading centre for contemporary photography - emerged from a 3.6 million pound redesign in May 2012 revealing the work of Irish architects O'Donnell and Tuomey. Relocating from Great Newport Street, its home for the past 27 years, to occupy a former warehouse built in Ramilies Street in 1910, The Photographers' Gallery has three floors of galleries, a studio floor for education activities, a bookshop, cafe and print sales space.
