Dorothea TanningOrganised in collaboration with the Reina Sofa in Madrid, Tate Modern presents a major retrospective of Dorothea Tanning's work. Spanning seven decades, it's the first large-scale exhibition on the artist for more than 25 years and the only one to cover her full career. Known for her surrealist works that combine the familiar with the strange, Tanning explored desire and sexuality, and presented the idea that there was more to life than meets the eye. This new exhibition brings together her early enigmatic paintings, ballet designs, disturbing textile sculptures and large-scale late works. Prominent works on display include her self-portrait Birthday 1942 and room-sized installation Chambre 202, Hotel du Pavot 1970-3.

About Tate Modern

Located along the banks of the River Thames in the former Bankside Power Station, originally designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1947, the architect of Battersea Power Station, Tate Modern opened to great acclaim in 2000. Since then it has welcomed millions of visitors through its imposing doors. More about Tate Modern
