Swedish singer Karin Dreijer Andersson, one half of brother-sister electronic duo The Knife and Royksopp collaborator, has won rave reviews with her debut album as Fever Ray, which will be showcased at this intriguing gig at the Empire. Far from sharing the same dance floor-ability of The Knife's work, Fever Ray is a more enchanting, mysterious, uncomfortable and yet beautiful experience for the ears. The creepily doleful song Keep the Streets Empty for Me is a musical masterpiece in spite (or because of?) a questionable sashay into the realms of pan-pipes, while single When I Grow Up has been an underground hit since its release earlier this year. "The sound invokes the lost hinterlands of 80s pop," claims The Guardian, which gave the singer's debut album five stars for its "sense of daring and ambition". NME are also fans, describing the work as "magnetic and rewarding, addictively sublime and slow-burning". It will be interesting to see what kind of Andersson turns up for this gig: the faceless, masked singer who performs behind opaque screens for The Knife, or the world-weary mother-of-two who has opened herself up in promoting her solo project as Fever Ray. One things for certain, as the BBC can confirm, this gig is bound to be "bloody marvellous".
