Having encountered the work of abstract painters when he moved to New York in 1966, Frank Bowling became increasingly interested in the effects that could be created by paint. This led to his experimentation with poured paintings. Pouring paint directly onto the canvas, sometimes from as high as two metres, Bowling discovered this innovative style that saw the paint freefall onto the canvas and, as a result, boasted a unique action painting. Part of Tate's BP British Art Displays, this exhibition displays a range of the Guyana-born artist's work.

About Tate Britain

Overlooking the River Thames, Tate Britain was originally founded through the philanthropy of the sugar magnate Sir Henry Tate. The Tate legacy now encompasses three other galleries around the UK, including Tate Modern also in London. Dedicated to showcasing Britain's artistic talent, Tate Britain is home to the greatest collection of British art from 1500 to the present day. More about Tate Britain
