Giorgio de Chirico: Myth and Mystery
THIS EVENT ENDED ON THE 19TH APRIL 2014
Born in Greece to Italian parents, Giorgio de Chirico was fascinated by classical mythology and legends from an early age and he studied painting in Athens, as well as Florence and Munich. This early interest is evident in his sculptural works, which depict characters such as Orpheus, Castor, and Hector and Andromache.
Best known for his paintings, de Chirico, or the father of metaphysical art, began sculpting in the late 1960s, creating small bronzes that echoed the mysterious figures that populated his paintings, often resembling tailor's dummies or automatons. He later devoted himself to producing multiples in silver patina and gilded bronze. Such was the success of his work that in 1972 he was awarded the Ibico Reggino Prize for Sculpture, jointly with Henry Moore.
