Bristolian duo Massive Attack, the pioneers of trip-hop and one of the most innovative and influential groups of their generation, drop into the Brixton Academy for three gigs this autumn. It's quite some time since the veterans released new material - fourth studio album 100th Window came out way back in 2003 - so frontmen 3D and Daddy G seem to be appeasing fans with a huge world tour as they await the release of the much-anticipated fifth album - provisionally titled Weather Underground - which is penned in for spring 2010. Renowned for their fusion of a wide range of musical styles, from punk to reggae to R&B, Massive Attack paved the way for a whole cluster of artists such as Portishead, Sneaker Pimps, Beth Orton and Tricky. With Daddy G back in the fold after taking time out to raise a family during the recording of the slightly disappointing 100th Window, the new record is said to hark back to the excellence of Blue Lines and Mezzanine. The group's fanbase shows now sign of diminishing: a third date in Brixton had to be added after the original two sold out in a jiffy.
