The Bear/The ProposalLucy J Skilbeck, recipient of the Genesis Future Directors Award, directs two one-act comedic shorts for The Young Vic in 2017. Translated from Anton Chekhov by Michael Frayn, The Bear and The Proposal explore the absurdity of gender divisions. Bringing the plays into modern day, Skilbeck's new production features a company of queer and transgender performers. The Bear sees widow Elena vow to spend the rest of her days at home, grieving. However, seven months into her mourning, an intrusion from an unknown stranger forces her to interact with the outside world. The Proposal, meanwhile, shows what happens when misunderstandings and wild accusations interfere with a proposal of marriage.

About The Young Vic

Knocked together out of breeze blocks for a minimal budget in 1970, Lawrence Olivier's experimental theatre was intended to last for five years, and provide an inspiration for the new generation of performers. But this was an experiment that worked and, years later, the Young Vic remains south London's premier venue for the contemporary, the shocking, the controversial, and the bizarre.
