The Learned Society Of Extra Ordinary ObjectsThis summer, Somerset House hosts new exhibition The Learned Society of Extra-Ordinary Objects, transforming the Terrace Rooms into a fictional society inspired by real history. Inspired by the 18th century Learned Society at Somerset House, which would see members gather in the Club Room's gin bar to discuss the extraordinary possibilities of different objects, the unique design exhibition centres on imagination, narrative and storytelling, with 30 contemporary designers, artists and makers creating and contributing objects. The new designs will present ordinary objects with extraordinary stories or suggest playful and surprising modifications to familiar objects, forcing visitors to reimagine their interaction with everyday items. The Society's gin bar will also be reopened for the summer, hosting special events and late-night evenings.

About Somerset House

Somerset House, once the site of a spectacular Tudor palace, now includes a magnificent 18th century art gallery housing celebrated collections belonging to the Courtauld Institute Gallery, as well as the Embankment Galleries (which replaced the Hermitage Rooms and The Gilbert Collection - the latter re-opened at the Victoria and Albert Museum in June 2009).
