Young Dorothea, to everyone's surprise, marries the academic Reverend Casaubon. During their Roman honeymoon, a meeting with Casaubon's young cousin, Will Ladislaw, arouses jealousy in the older man, doing all he can to stop Ladislaw's pursuing his wife. Geoffrey Beevers's adaptation of George Eliot's novel has been described as "one of the most captivating literary dramatisations I've ever encountered," by Dominic Cavendish in The Telegraph, who writes this trilogy "works brilliantly as an introduction to a masterpiece but it also cuts to the heart of it, exploring in the 'rarefied social air' of 1829 England."

The Orange Tree Theatre opened in its current location in February 1991, just across the road from its original location above the Orange Tree pub. Converting a school into a theatre, they created London's only full-time professional theatre in the round, where the audience and the actors share the performance space.
