Voices from the DeepMore than 700 personal letters, trapped at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Ireland for 70 years, can be seen in Voices from the Deep, a temporary display of shipwrecked treasures at The Postal Museum. Torpedoed by a German U-Boat, SS Gairsoppa sank but the 12 bundles of letters and other items from the ship's cargo were miraculously preserved in an airlock that formed as the steam boat went under. Undisturbed until discovered in 2011, the cargo, including a silver ingot sent from colonial India to the UK to help with the war effort, go on display for the first time. Explore the recovered cargo, see original footage of the recovery and use UV torch lights to reveal snippets of the fragmented letters.

About The Postal Museum and Mail Rail

From mid-2017, The Postal Museum welcomes visitors to explore the history of the Royal Mail and travel on a network of underground tunnels not used since 2003. Mail Rail, the tunnels running from Whitechapel in East London, to Paddington in the west, and snaking along Oxford Street and under Selfridges, are the centrepiece of the Postal Museum.
