Women Of The Pleasure Quarters: A Japanese Painted ScreenA painted screen from the late-18th century attributed to the Japanese artist Utagawa Toyoharu, 'Coutesans of the Tamaya House' depicts the lives of courtesans in the brothel district of Yoshiwara. On temporary display in Room 3 of the British Museum, Women of the pleasure quarters is a free exhibition which ties in with the museum's major ticketed autumn exhibition, Shunga: Sex and Pleasure in Japanese Art and offers visitors a chance to see a rare six-fold painted Japanese screen considered one of the most important surviving Ukiyo-e paintings of its period.

About British Museum

Over seven millions objects from all over the world are housed in this impressive museum of human history and culture (many of the artefacts are stored underneath the museum due to lack of space).
