Women of the World FestivalOpening on International Women's Day, the Women of the World Festival (WOW) is back for its sixth year in 2016. Now the largest women's festival in the world, the festival sees meetings happen across five continents with one million people involved, giving women the chance to talk about their heroines and how their achievements have inspired them. Originally launched by Jude Kelly, Southbank Centre's Artistic Director, following the criticisms she received as a woman new to the role, it also tackles difficult topics such as honour-based violence, alcoholism, rape, trans activism and criminal justice. Highlight of this year's festival include Inga Beale, CEO of Lloyds, on being the first woman to run the insurance market in its 327-year history; Sadiq Khan MP on what the next Mayor of London can do for gender equality; and Annie Lennox talking to Jude Kelly about her incredible career and work campaigning for the rights of women and people live with HIV/AIDS. Other names taking part include comedians Shazi Mirza, Bridget Christie, Sara Pascoe and Sue Perkins; singer and activist Charlotte Church; BBC Radio 1 DJ Gemma Cairney; and Paralympian Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson.

About Southbank Centre

London's hub of cultural arts, The Southbank Centre announced in March 2013 that it's set for a £100 million revamp that will see the 1960s design finally move into the 21st century with a proposal that includes a floating glass pavilion, two more roof gardens, a space for riverside arts and a large pedestrian area.
