These days you may have a tough time hearing the nightingales sing above the drone of unremitting traffic, but Berkeley Square stills retains a historically significant air about it. In the centre of the square is a wonderful parade of 220-year-old London plane trees, with dappled, peeling trunks and giant lobed leaves. Laid out in 1730 by architect William Kent, only the west side boasts any surviving Georgian houses. Incidentally, Number 50 is said to be haunted by an apparition that reportedly scared at least three individuals to death, so tread carefully. Previous residents of the square include two prime ministers - Winston Churchill and George Canning.
