CLOSED FOR REFURBISHMENT UNTIL EARLY 2009.
Well-curated homage to everything tea and coffee related.
Hot beverage fanatics can take advantage of the dual drinking-related delights on offer here. First have a wander around the museum - incidentally the first of its kind in Britain - and find out about the fascinating 400-year-old history relating to the tea and coffee trades. Then work up a thirst examining the 1,000 teapots and coffee pots on display, before wetting your appetite by finding out about the extraordinary tea and coffee traditions from around the world. When you’re well and truly ready for the real thing, head over to the museum’s authentic tea room for some of the finest blends around. Served up by experts in the trade, every infusion comes complete with a five-minute timer which ensures each cup reaches its full potential before being enjoyed. In many ways, the museum’s modern, concrete and high-tech surrounds appear incongruous with this attraction’s emphasis on history and tradition. Look a bit further, however, beyond the grey, functional edifice and the museum’s proximity to London Bridge - an area where so much tea was imported in the 20th century – makes much more sense. For those crazy about tea and coffee this is the perfect blend.
Best for:
Tea and coffee-making traditions, exhibtions, pots and paraphernalia.
Did you know?
In the 1620s tea was classified a health drink and available from chemists. |
