More than 23 million pounds has been spent on re-development of the National Army Museum which reopens in 2017 to reveal a radical transformation. Over 2,500 objects are displayed in five permanent thematic galleries, laid out over four floors - Soldier, Army, Battle, Society and Insight. Added to these is a temporary exhibition space, a study centre, three-room learning centre, a cafe, shop as well as Play Base, where children aged zero to seven can learn through play. Through individual stories and artefacts visitors can explore the role of the British army for the past 400 years, including its experience of battle from the 1640s to the present day. A chance to see the cultural impact of the armed forces, the Society section shows how the army has influenced everything from toys (Action Man) to fashion (Burberry Trench Coat) and fiction (War Horse). A fascinating insight into the role the British Army plays in military and civilian life.
