The historic Stationers' Hall, home to the Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers, has stood on this site since 1606. The present building, however, was built in 1673 following the destruction of the original hall in the Great Fire of 1666, and its facade radically altered in the 1800 to bring it up to date (according to 19th century tastes). From the Middle Ages no man was allowed to trade in the City of London unless he resided there and belonged to a Guild. So if you wanted to work in the print, publishing and paper industries which included packaging, stationery products, you had to become a member of the company. The Guild of Stationers still continues to do the same work today but their concerns now extend to include digital media. The hall, close St Paul's Cathedral and with its own secluded garden, is also available for hire for events and receptions for up to 400 people. The Livery Hall is the largest and grandest of the rooms with oak floors and stained glass windows showing Shakespeare and Edward IV its an impressive room steeped in history.
