Founded in 1788 and named after the great Swedish scientist Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778), The Linnean Society of London is among the oldest of London's Learned Societies. It can also lay claim to being the world's oldest active organisation devoted exclusively to natural history in the broadest sense. Fellowship is open to all interested in the science of natural history. Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace are among the illustrious fellows who have been part of the society.
