In November 2015 the historic German Gymnasium in King's Cross, the first purpose-built gymnasium of its type in England, became a restaurant with a large al fresco terrace, patisserie counter and a clock which chimes at 4pm daily, signalling the beginning of the German tradition of Kaffee and Kuchen. Designed by Edward Gruning, the restaurant in the spectacular Grade II listed building, built in 1865 for the German Gymnastics Society, has a menu of Mittel-European dishes - a nod to the site's German heritage. Serving breakfast through to dinner, choices include starters of lamb's lettuce with crisp bacon and truffled beef broth with liver dumplings. Among the mains are seared scallops and mettwurst, wild mushrooms with celeriac, and heartier options of veal schnitzel with warm potato salad and lingonberry compote. Cakes and pastries - apple strudel with vanilla sauce, Sachertorte with Chantilly cream and twice baked cheesecake with blueberries - are served with speciality coffees. The Black Forest coffee comes with Kirsch and whipped cream and the Pharisaer coffee with dark Jamaican rum.
