Every summer, from the end of May until the beginning of September, the Southbank Centre brings the beach to the city. Get your toes in the sand, bring a bucket and spade and enjoy 85 tonnes of fine golden play sand. It's opposite the skateboard park under Queen Elizabeth Hall so you can watch the boarders as you build sand castles. It doesn't get more 'urban beach' than that. It's overlooked by the Queen Elizabeth Hall Roof Garden and surrounded by food trucks and pop-ups - see the Snog bus for frozen ice cream. Add in Jeppe Hein's Appearing Rooms, free weekend festivals, concerts and events and it's easy to see why the Southbank makes wonderful spot in summer.
