Proud Central reopened as The Strand Gallery in 2010.Alex Proud started out as a Japanese antiques dealer but a twist of fate led Proud to switch to photography. The impetus for change came in the form of his PA who was friendly with photographer Dennis Morris; it was his images of The Sex Pistols and Bob Marley which made up the first exhibition - and gave Proud front page coverage. Now the Proud name conjures up striking images of rock royalty with his two London galleries showing artistic shots by the likes of Rankin and Hollywood photographer Bob Willoughby. Proud has also established a name for himself as a survivor, overcoming financial strife and voluntary liquidation in 2006. Of the two Proud Galleries this one just off Trafalgar Square is the more mainstream venue; the other, at Camden Stables Market, offers a more 'street' vibe and includes 'At Proud', a lively DJ bar and popular drinking terrace. Highly sought after tickets for opening nights have meant the stars aren't just confined to the walls with Sir Paul McCartney, Liam Gallagher and Amy Winehouse attending.
