After a string of successful pop-ups and residencies, Oded Oren, who was Executive Chef of the renowned Turkiz in Tel Aviv for eight years, has set up his first restaurant, Oren, in Dalston. Reviewing one of his pop-ups, Jay Rayner praised the ox cheek and hummus as, "verging on genius". The same dish features on the menu at this 35-cover restaurant where bold Middle Eastern flavours come through in the Jerusalem mixed grill with tahini and turmeric pickled mango. Grilled lamb sweetbreads, cured sardines, brill tartar and burnt aubergine are listed along with larger dishes like his signature Monkfish 'chraime' and hand rolled cous cous. You can eat anything from roasted Jerusalem artichokes with labneh and hazelnuts to spicy lamb's brain at the bar while enjoying organic and biodynamic wines chosen by Zeren Wilson of bittenandwritten.com. Brunch is a big thing and on the weekends you can fill the gap between breakfast and lunch with chopped liver and onions, sweet aubergines, egg and salad in a pita, and challah French toast with seasonal compote.
