Popular ramen noodle bar Tonkotsu has expanded from its original Soho branch to open Tonkotsu East in an arch that used to house a mechanic's yard near Haggerston station. Named after the "lip-smacking, creamy ramen" typical in Kyushu, Japan's southern-most island, but found all over Japan, Tonkotsu has just three ramen dishes on offer: London Ramen, Tonkotsu Ramen and Tokyo Spicy, beefed up with sides like handmade gyoza, salads and crab korokke as well as Japanese octopus pancakes. The London Ramen is their take on the traditional English breakfast with flamed-charred smoked bacon, egg, shimeji and shiitake mushrooms, spring onions and sesame seeds, all in a delicious soup-y ramen. The equally good Tokyo Spicy is made with shredded pork and chilli oil. Drinks to wash it all down with include Japanese and UK beers and whiskies, sake and juices.
