Fashioned on the izakayas found tucked away in the backstreets of Tokyo and beyond, but with a London touch, Yumi Izakaya specialises in Japanese snacks and drinking food. Owner Caspar von Hofmannsthal has partnered with Tom and Ed Martin of ETM Group to reincarnate Yumi Izakaya, originally a restaurant in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, in central London. T he 38-cover casual dining restaurant within The Piccadilly London West End is open seven days, from lunch until late, and has a menu which changes regularly according to the seasons and includes small plates of okonomiyaki Osaka style, daikon wrapped pork gyozas and chilli fried cauliflower. The walls feature wooden tiles made from chopped tree trunks, long tables and benches are made from exposed wood, and lighting is kept low with hanging filament bulbs throughout the space. The open grill, a natural focal point, is where meats and bacon wrapped vegetable skewers are cooked, and adjoining the area is a bar with stool seating.
