Inspired by England's original coffee houses, The Black Penny isn't your average coffee shop. Spread across two floors, the coffee house serves hearty breakfasts, seasonal salads, tempting lunch dishes and coffee on the ground floor while downstairs, in The Seminar Pit, a programme of guest speakers inspire, educate and entertain through a series of poetry nights, debates and live concerts. The twist honours the 17th Century Penny Universities, which would invite visitors to pay a penny in exchange for admission, a cup of coffee and the chance to partake in academic and political debates. The Pit can also be hired out for private meetings while the ground floor proves a great spot for smaller groups to meet and work over coffee and cake. Coffee is provided by leading roaster Alchemy while the food menu has been created by head chef George Notley (formerly of Tom's Deli). Breakfast highlights include The Hunter, providing a meaty start to the morning, the generous portioned sandwiches and the spicy Chorizo Baked Beans. At lunch diners can expect dishes such as stone bass ceviche with carrot, fennel and radish; a smoked chicken, bacon, brie, cranberry and spinach sandwich; and seared tuna with black sesame seeds and soy.
