The Hampstead Theatre has existed in various forms since 1959, when it opened in a Scout Hall and its opening season in 1959 included two new plays by Harold Pinter, The Room and The Dumb Waiter. In 1962 the company moved to a portacabin in Swiss Cottage where it remained for nearly 40 years. In 2003, it moved to a new, state-of-the-art purpose built theatre. The aim of this modern theatre is to encourage new writing and be involved with the local community, through workshops and development. The Hampstead will occasionally do a revival of an old play, but its best to come here if you're looking for something fresh and innovative. Playwrights who have had their early work produced at Hampstead Theatre before moving on to bigger stages include Brian Friel, Mike Leigh, and Philip Ridley.
