The Orange Tree Theatre opened in its current location in February 1991, just across the road from its original location above the Orange Tree pub. Converting a school into a theatre, they created London's only full-time professional theatre in the round, where the audience and the actors share the performance space. This obviously lends itself well to Shakespeare's plays and the company has a reputation for making the Bard's plays accessible, for pupils in particular. They also give young people the chance to participate in high quality live theatre. Described by Michael Billington in The Guardian as "A pocket sized National Theatre", founder and Artistic Director Sam Walters has worked tirelessly to keep the theatre at the top of the fringe.
