What Nicholas Hytner did next: after 12 years as director of the National Theatre, the theatre chief is building a theatre from the ground up. Designed by Steve Tompkins and Roger Watts of Haworth Tompkins, winner of the 2014 Stirling Prize for architecture for the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool, the Bridge Theatre brings theatre into the 21st century, offering theatre-makers a platform to create adventurous new work, and giving audiences a modern 900-seat adaptable theatre - capable of staging traditional, in-the-round and promenade performances. Teaming up with Nick Starr, his right hand man at the NT, Hytner's theatre within One Tower Bridge will stage predominantly new work, plus the occasional re-invention of a great work from the past. The riverside site, originally expected to accommodate the Royal Opera House during the renovation of its Covent Garden home, is now set to become a cultural venue of national importance. And, if all goes well, it will be the flagship of a number of new theatres in London.
