Master sushi chef Nobu Matsuhisa's first European hotel, the Nobu Hotel in Shoreditch, is a striking building with staggered with terraces based on designs originally proposed by Ron Arad. The hotel houses 143 rooms and - given Nobu has made his name in creating the finest Japanese cuisine in the world - it's no surprise that there's a statement Nobu restaurant: a dramatic five metre high space with room for 240. While the exterior makes use of angular concrete balconies the rooms, designed by Studio Mica, feature concrete walls and murals by local artists. Standard rooms have a mini dining area with ottomans and floor-to-ceiling windows while suites have luxuries like freestanding bathtubs, huge skylights, balconies with views over the garden below and spacious lounge and dining areas. The five storey building includes its own landscaped garden, the courtyard creating an ideal spot for al-fresco dining in the warmer months.
