Prince Of Wales
The Prince of Wales, a distinctive Victorian gothic public house in East Molesey, just across the river from Hampton Court Palace, started out as The Railway Hotel. Built in 1853 not long after the opening of Hampton Court Palace to the public in 1838, the pub has long been serving as a pleasant stop-off point if you're visting the palace. The opening of the railways - with the London and South Western branch railway arriving in 1849 - also helped bring a huge influx of visitors to East Molesey. By 1900, there were six licensed premises within 100 yards of Hampton Court Bridge. Although some of the Victorian features remain - elaborate gothic stone windows and decorative gables - the ground floor has been significantly modernised. There's a bit of a mix in what they serve too - traditional pints (IPA, Abbot, old speckeled hen and a seasonl ale) are on offer as well as food (steak and chips, salmon and brie fishcakes) and wine. This side of the street has a wide pavement, plenty of restaurants and cafes with pavement dining and a lively atmosphere in good weather. It's an easy stroll from here to the riverbank and the leisure boating on offer on the upstream side of the bridge.
