The Lock Tavern would be a great place to drop in and escape the tiresome, tie-dye-clad vendors of Camden’s famous street market. Unfortunately that wouldn’t do justice to this fantastic pub which merits an outing all of its own. Once upon a time it was a just another crummy London pub but since it was bought up by, among others, DJ Jon Carter, it’s been transformed into everything the contemporary British pub should be. The unpretentious interior is a stylish cross-breed of old and new, painted a surprisingly un-oppressive black. Leather armchairs and sofas provide the seating with some chunky wooden tables to rest your pint on. Cometh the sun and everyone heads out back to the lovely cobbled beer garden or up to the roof terrace which overlooks the markets. Everyone rabbits on about the Sunday roast – undeniably a mouth-watering bargain – but they’re underselling the rest of the menu. The mix is extensive and flavoursome – something for everyone - from vegetarian delights to square pies. The best thing about The Lock Tavern is the sense of deja vu it inspires: first-timers have a strange feeling that they’ve been there before, just waiting for someone they know to emerge through the throng. DJs spin their wares Thursday through Saturdays. So, it’s great fun for a chilled drink during the day or a more energetic evening visit.
