Arguably one of the most elegant private clubs in the world, Annabel's has been entertaining the great and the good for the past five decades. Founded by entrepreneur Mark Birley in 1963, Annabel's is named after his then wife, Lady Annabel Vane-Tempest-Stewart. A discrete door on Berkeley Square leads to a sumptuous interior originally designed by Nina Campbell and Mark Birley and features his outstanding collection of paintings. There's a beautiful dining room with Moorish ceiling adjacent to the dance floor. The club also boasts one of London's last great wine cellars, overseen by Richard Rotti, the cellar master here for 21 years. All this luxury comes at a price, of course. Membership is £1,000 - and that's for the joining fee - you also need to stump up £1,250 each year and you must proposed and seconded by two existing members. But once you've jumped through those hoops you'll be part of a very exclusive club whose illustrious clientele has included members of the Royal Family, and legends of the music and film industry - Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Jack Nicholson, The Rolling Stones and Dames Elizabeth Taylor and Shirley Bassey. Dress for the occasion; ladies are requested to wear smart eveningwear, which may include tailored trousers, and gentlemen to don a suit or a jacket and tailored trousers with a collared shirt. Untucked shirts, leggings, and office wear are not just frowned upon, they are banned.
