Moving away from misspelt menus, bustling noise and racks of wind-dried ducks, this impeccably designed restaurant represents the future of Chinatown. Dark hardwood furniture, pastel lighting and a decor that owes more to Japanese simplicity than neon ethno-kitsch all make for a soothing, sophisticated dining experience.
We were in for the lunchtime Dim Sum and we were impressed by more than just appearances. The beautifully-printed menus offer a wider selection than the usual Chinese restaurant standards and much of it was cooked with real flair. Strawberry spare ribs were a delicious change on the usual insipid sweet 'n' sour version, prawn dumplings contained chewy, fresh prawns, while Shanghai style pork dumplings were as close to the genuine article as I’ve ever tasted in this country, almost collapsing under the weight of rich, herby pork and stock.
I fear that this represents the death knell for the rough-and-ready cheer and rock-bottom prices of old Chinatown.. Though still inexpensive by West End standards, this is far from the superbudget dining that Gerrard Street offers. Still, in both presentation and cuisine, this is way ahead of its nearby rivals, and altogether a classy Chinese Experience.
