Gordon Ramsay's former protege Angela Hartnett has gone into partnership with her boyfriend, Neil Borthwick (who she met at The Connaught), and the co-founders of Canteen, Dom Lake and Patrick Clayton-Malone, to set up Merchants Tavern, a restaurant and bar housed within a Victorian warehouse and former apothecary in the heart of Shoreditch. Hartnett has also brought the head chef from her Michelin-starred Murano restaurant in Mayfair, Diego Cardoso, to help with the new restaurant. The modern European menu is inspired by Italian, French and Spanish cooking, with Gloucester old spot belly, halibut, and monkfish and mussel ragout among the main courses. Food is paired with classic and natural wines, traditional cocktails and British lagers, ales, stouts and perries. It's "the sort of place you can bring your mum or your girlfriend", Hartnett told the London Evening Standard.
