Russian restaurateur Arkady Novikov, who has more than 50 restaurants in Moscow and is "widely acknowledged as Russia's answer to Terence Conran" (The Telegraph), made his first foray into London with Novikov Restaurant & Bar on Berkeley Street, costing a cool £8 million. Combining two restaurants under one name, the space is divided into an Asian and Italian restaurant with the fomer on the ground floor and the latter in a sunken atrium. Each is served by a different kitchen. There's a less well advertised third level, a wood-panelled basement lounge bar serving Russian snacks. This "bold, bizarre, brilliant" (GQ) venture impresses from its lavish decor to its quality cuisine. The interior of the Italian dining-room is designed to resemble a Sicilian terrace while the Asian restaurant specialises in Chinese and Pan Asian cuisine, with a menu designed by the skilled and experienced Japanese-trained head chef Jeff Tyler.
