Once a chic, minimalist St James's eatery branded a 'Scenster' restaurant by Tatler in the '90s, Avenue was relaunched in February 2014 with a new look by Russell Sage and a 'New American' menu from head chef Michael Blizzard, previously of Bar Boulud at the Mandarin Oriental and three Michelin-starred Rsetaurant Daniel in New York. Taking inspiration from regional American food, the menu offers dishes like fried soft shell crab with avocado, arugula and chipotle mayo; clam chowder served in sour dough with littleneck clams and paper bag 'crumbled' bay crackers; lobster mac; and USDA grain fed beef steaks from Creekstone Ranch. Order The Avenue Black Angus Hamburger are you'll get a burger served on a brioche bun with hot relish, green pickle and fries. To end with something sweet try the donut holes with cinnamon sugar, Hershey melt and bourbon custard, or New York cheesecake with rhubarb and ginger. Interiors nod to Rick Mather's original Manhattan loft space design of the 1990s, with screen printed timber-look tiles, floor-to-ceiling white and ash grey walls, sculptural art installations and a unique chandelier made from wine glasses centre stage above a stunning decanting station in the middle of the dining room.
