Originally intended as an oasis of calm for the members of the gentry caught up in hectic visits to the capital, The Connaught, with all its Victorian charm feels as though it's been preserved in a protective environment and sealed off from the modern world since its opening in 1897. Doormen dressed in top hats and white gloves still usher guests into the majestic entrance hall with its magnificent mosaic floor and grand wooden staircase while the age-old tradition of afternoon tea is still re-enacted daily at Espelette.
Having said that, there are some signs of contemporary design rubbing up against the hotel's classic feel. Prestigious designer David Collins has leant a sleek and stylish décor to The Connaught Bar, with shades of pink, pistachio and lilac creating a high class setting for sipping cocktails that are as innovative as they are delicious. The Coburg Bar also brings a modern designer twist to the feel of a classic London bar and offers an intimate and inviting setting.
For the foodies, Hélène Darroze at The Connaught brings the cuisine of the chef's native south west France into a stylish setting. The restaurant has been awarded two Michelin stars to accompany its three rosettes from the AA. There are separate menus from brunch, lunch and dinner, which are each as inventive and delicious as the other.
Best for:
The Aman Spa at the Connaught was voted the 'Best Hotel Spa' in Tatler's 2012 Spa Guide.
Did you know?
The hotel was closed throughout most of 2007 for a £70 million restoration project.
