A welcome refuge from the glass and concrete around Cardinal Place in Victoria, The Phoenix is a well respected gastro pub frequented by workers from the surrounding office blocks during the week and a less frantic flow of shoppers and tourists on weekends. Pint of prawns, pan-fried cod and warm tossed salad of smoked trout are typical of the posh gastro-type fare. Sausages and mash, for example, comes with not just any old mash but a buttery chive mash and served a healthy dollop of baked apple puree. The open kitchen, wooden tables and comfy sofas are typical of the gastro pub decor that Londoners seemingly can't get enough of but with furnishings of a good, solid quality, it escapes the 'not another gastro pub' pitfall. Owned by the Geronimo Inns group, who also run The Duke of Clarence in South Kensington and 22 other pubs in London and the South East besides, it's safe to say you're in good hands here.
