Situated only minutes from Alexandra Palace, opposite Alexandra Palace station and on the original starting point of the historic Alexandra Park Racecourse in London's Wood Green, The Starting Gate has long been a popular spot for a pint among locals and dog walkers. A refurb in time for summer 2015 added a courtyard garden to the charms of this traditional Victorian boozer which offers booth seating, speciality beers and traditional pub dishes. The bar platter comes with pork sliders, wedges, squid, BBQ wings and battered black pudding, there's hake in cider and tarragon batter, and 8oz 21-day aged rib-eye with fries and watercress. Weekend brunch brings plates of eggy bread with grilled bacon and maple syrup, Yorkshire gammon and Sunday roasts.
