John Smedley is renowned for its long running production of luxury knitwear. The story started in the Lea Mills factory in Derbyshire in 1784 and that's where the luxury knits are still made, over 230 years later. Still family owned (Managing Director Ian Maclean is the 8th generation of the Smedley family to run the business), the company's famous and fashionable clients included Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and the Beatles in the 1950s and '60s. By 1980 John Smedley was collaborating with British designers Vivienne Westwood and Paul Smith and in January 2013 received the Royal Warrant from The Queen as 'Manufacturer of Fine Knitwear'. Known for its extra fine merino wool, jumpers, t-shirts and cardigans also come in cotton, cashmere blends and silk.
