Well established as one of the best cheese shops in London, La Fromagerie is in the little black book of food lovers with a nose for top quality cheese. First opened in Highbury in 1992 by Patricia Michelson, La Fromagerie is also found in Marylebone and, from September 2017, on Bloomsbury's lovely Lambs Conduit Street. Follow your nose to the Cheese Room for the best Beaufort Chalet d'Alpage, La Fromagerie's signature cheese and the one that started it all - Patricia first came across the cheese at a farmer's market in Meribel and sold it from her garden shed back in London. In Bloomsbury the ground floor of the late Georgian building is taken up by a shop filled with seasonal fruit and vegetables, breads and cakes displayed on a long marble top bar. Take a seat in the 26-cover bar and cafe with deep dark green velvet banquettes on eat al fresco at the pavement tables. Downstairs a glass covered courtyard hosts tastings and private parties and acts as a showroom for one-off antique pieces from France, Italy, and Belgium. Open from breakfast, they offer cheese and wine pairings, charcuterie, smoked salmon and oysters, freshly prepared salads, seasonal dishes and fondue throughout the day. On weekends brunch is served 'til 3pm and the cafe stays open late on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings.
